Which sentence do you prefer? 👀💭

This is from Apotheosis, my sci-fi fantasy personal project with gothic Joan of Arc vibes. The Before version of this sentence could be from any book, but intentionally choosing words that fit the atmosphere of my project makes the sentence belong to *my* book.

Video Description:

[A vibrant pink and orange sunset horizon over the ocean, panning to the right. Overlaid is white text that reads: Why word choice is so important. Before and after. This text disappears and then screenshots of a before sentence and an after sentence appear. The before reads: This keep is made of white plaster walls and brown clay tiles, scented with ocean and rain. The after reads: This fortress is a place of white stucco walls and earthen clay tiles, its lungs spiced with saltwater and petrichor.]

Tell me your book’s origin story! One of my projects was born from my chronic pain and needing a place to explore my feelings. 8 years later, it’s a totally different book now, but my chronic pain is still a huge part of the story. Another project was inspired by the feelings I had after finishing the Mass Effect trilogy!

Video Description:

[A white keyboard on a light wooden desk. Sarah’s pale white hands type on the keyboard, and each key glows with a pink light as it’s pressed. This video takes up the middle third of the Instagram reel, and the top and bottom thirds are a pink sunset sky with a rainbow. White text reads: What inspired you to write your book?]

Please stop telling new writers their first draft

Please stop telling new writers their first draft *will* be bad! It’s absolutely normal for the writing in a first draft to be “bad,” but normalizing that truth can be done in other ways. When we say that a first draft will be awful, we’re just building a negative association with drafting that does nothing but make writing harder.

Your first draft will be a lower quality than the final draft. However, it can still be good. It can be good solely based on the fact that it exists, and that’s a first draft’s only job. It can also be good because the writing is genuinely good.

Do I struggle with the quality of my first drafts? Of course, but I also love my first drafts, and I love reading what I’ve written so far to motivate me to keep writing.

I truly believe it can only benefit writers to find a way to love their first draft, and I think it only hurts us when we say our first drafts are trash.

Video Description:

[A computer monitor with a Scrivener project open. Chapter 2 is up, and Sarah types on a keyboard, drafting the current scene. In front of the monitor is a desk against a white wall with a variety of framed pictures. Pink light glows behind the monitor and also projects onto the wall from an unseen source.]

Long 7 Slide Image Description Ahead:

[Slide 1: A black cat stretches out on her back and reaches out with her paw. Pink text with a light pink highlight reads: Writing positivity featuring my cat.

Slide 2: The same cat stares at the viewer with droplets of water all over her face. White text reads: If you write, you’re a real writer.

Slide 3: The same cat looks at the viewer while upside down on a pink office chair. White text reads: Writing for fun is just as important as writing to get published.

Slide 4: The same cat looks out a window on a blue, sunny day. White text reads: It’s okay if you don’t write every day or even every month. You’re still a writer.

Slide 5: The same cat lies on a shelf with her front paw dangling over the side. White text reads: Some people make a robot write their book and then call themself an author. You actually used your brain. You’re not an impostor.

Slide 6: The same cat loafs on a large oval mirror. Because the camera’s flash is on, her eyes glow in the mirror’s reflection. White text reads: Doubting yourself doesn’t mean you’re a bad writer. It just means you care about your writing.

Slide 7: The same cat bites and kicks a big, stuffed carrot while looking at the viewer. There is no text on this slide.]

I see my projects as live-action movies while writing, so that would be The Dream. Realistically, animation would be a much better fit! I’d especially love to see my magic systems animated! ✨
